Scotch Eggs

Believe it or not, I am inspired by scotch eggs. I have a bit of a theory about them that I think relates to film.

If you take a scotch egg and look at it, it looks appalling.

A scotch egg.

However, if you think about it, it's quite a good way to make a film. If you take the elements of a scotch egg - breadcrumbs, sausage meat and an egg - it seems like an oddball combination. A distinct appearance on the surface, scratch away at it a bit more and you have the main substance , the meat. A film may appear to be of a certain genre on the surface, maybe even stylistically, but this is just the surface. It may be something you don't expect past this though. The meat might be something completely different, a certain mood, a certain tone.

And then you have the big reveal, the epicentre. This is the twist, the pay off. An egg surrounded by all this? What a pleasant surprise. A film with a wonderful twist, wrapped in a strong plot, which looks and sounds a certain way, will make a perfect combination.

To the outsider, the scotch egg, particularly the egg, would be a shock, but nonetheless, a delicious picnic treat. When making a film, I think you must consider every single element, and realise that no matter how odd it may seem, the end result could well be worth it.
