Directing Essay

I have decided to work on one of the proposed questions on my directing essay. From the first read through I thought that it would make for an interesting research subject, and is something that I have been looking into research for some considerable time. I also think that it will give me, personally, a better understanding of the subject and will hopefully help me to practically enforce the things I learn into my work.

Research the approach taken to working with actors by a director you wish to study.
Describe the process and artistic outcome of that method. You should make reference to established methodology in performance and your bibliography should reflect your research.

I think it will be beneficial for me to grasp a better knowledge of this as working with actors is something I think I can hugely improve on, and would like to know how professional directors go about this. I would like to discover the different methods, and the ways the relationships between actors and directors form.

I imagine that there will be a wide range of methods and different approaches, and I would say that no two are the same. Discovering the benefits and negatives of different directors will be something I can work with in the future, and take traits from various directors to hopefully form my own system and style.

The director that I intend to concentrate on to do this essay is Roman Polanski. Not only is he one of my favourite directors, I'd say that it is safe to say that he is a very interesting character in his own life, and not necessarily for good reasons.
