First of all, I should inform you of what type of films I want to direct. For me, films are a form of escapism, a way out and a release. From when I was a young boy I've always been a lover of fantasy, good versus bad, surrealism and exaggeration. Larger than life characters have always been essential to me, with exaggerated personalities, special abilities and ridiculous qualities.
What I have never liked about film is the whole concept of kitchen sink realism, and gritty dramas. I can't stand realistic characters, people who live next door, walk down your street. I've always felt this type of realism should be separate from film. How could anyone prefer to watch something that they see everyday over a supervillain questing for world domination.
Living in Halifax has meant that I've certainly seen my fair share of grit, and I certainly feel that I can easily go without.
So, at this current moment with a budget of £6.97, my aim is to make films with extreme characters, ridiculous situations and surrealism. With no budget I feel t would be out of the question to try to make anything other than small, gritty films.
So what better way than to twist the norm into a fantasy world, to revolt audiences with ridicule and to tear apart what they perceive as normality. I want to direct films that test acceptance and the commonplace, to spit in the face of the Coronation Street drama. Most of all I want the audience to escape out of their regular life and into something different, something that puts everything else on hold and into irrelevance, into something they are unfamliar with, that they don't understand and that plays with their thoughts.
Overall, I aim to simply make some DIFFERENT!
