One of my favourite films of all time, which I have recently rewatched for the umteenth, is the first feature film by one of my favourite directors of all time. This would be Eraserhead by David Lynch. I would definitely say that I draw inspiration from this film as it was not backed by a film studio due to Lynch's lack of experience.
The funding for the film was granted to Lynch from the American Film Institute, and as a result of the film, Lynch was hired to direct the Elephant Man.
If that isn't inspirational, I don't know what is.
From a directing point of view, my favourite part of the film is Lynch's choice of sound through the film. The low grumbles, and constant sounds of machinery are incredibly unsettling and create an atmosphere that I have never felt in any other film that I have watched. I think this is at it's best in the scene when Henry goes to Mary's house and meets Mr and Mrs X. The tension is unrelentless.
I also like admire how Lynch was able to create such a fantastic working relationship with the lead actor Jack Nance, that for the entire 5 year filming duration he kept the same ridiculous hairstyle.
The 5 year film period itself is a fantastic demonstration of dedication to an idea, which I think is incredibly inspirational, particularly when working on a project that a lot of people would cast aside as a load of nonsense.
